Sustainability

We’re committed to achieving sustainable growth that benefits our customers, our employees, the communities around us, and our shareholders.

Key Sustainability Performance Indicators

We strive to be the leader in energy efficiency. Recognizing that our facilities require large amounts of energy to maintain the low temperatures your products need, we operate under a sustainability plan that optimizes resources and reduces our footprint on the environment.

Our energy conservation efforts are your energy conservation efforts too. As your preferred temperature-controlled service provider, we want you to claim our sustainability progress as part of your own supply-chain network’s pledge to energy conservation.

Americold kWh Savings vs 2010

We saved more than 320m kWh of electricity since 2010 - that’s enough to power more than 29,000 homes for a year!

Read about our sustainability programs and other activities that we're undertaking below.

Americold lbs CO2e Savings vs 2010

Convert those 320m kWh of saved electricity into carbon dioxide equivalents and that equates to us preventing more than 264m lbs. of CO2e from being released into the atmosphere!

Did You Know?

The ground underneath our cold storage rooms must be kept from freezing to avoid frost heave that can buckle building supports and affect the integrity of facilities.

Americold uses heat rejection systems to exploit the hot air generated by our condensers to warm the Glycol that runs in pipes under the floors of our facilities. Doing this allows us to maintain an above-freezing environment for the foundations without affecting temperatures in our rooms.

Additional Programs

Real Time Monitoring

Since 2011, Americold has partnered with Cascade Energy, the leading provider of energy monitoring services, to provide real-time monitoring of our energy usage. With this state-of- the-art technology, we’re able to pin-point where we’re using the most energy in our day-to-day operations.

We've implemented energy standards at each one of our sites that indicate exactly how much energy a facility should be using based on a given occupancy level and season. Out-of- tolerance readings trigger alerts to local management, and our energy management team works to quickly resolve any issues. By eliminating these irregularities we’re able to drive-out inefficiencies and reduce our energy consumption.

Demand Response Programs

Americold participates in a variety of Demand Response Program offered by utility companies throughout the world. With 38 sites in the U.S., three in New Zealand and one in Australia, these 42 facilities support local utility companies by reducing energy usage during a spike due to high customer demands. Our commitment to these programs not only helps prevent brownouts and blackouts, but also allows the utility companies to operate on current resources, perhaps delaying or negating the need to build more power generation stations.

Natural Gas Fuel Cell and Solar Solutions

Americold’s Salinas, CA facility generates more than 600,000kWh per year from a natural gas fuel cell that converts natural gas to clean energy.

One of our Gloucester, MA sites has been retrofitted with roof-mounted solar units that generate up to 500,000kWh of clean energy per year.

These pilot programs alone reduce our CO2e footprint by over 1m lbs. per year, and they're helping us evaluate the cost effectiveness of alternative energy options for other facilities.

Energy Efficient Operations

Forty-five Americold sites have fitted with motion-activated LED lighting systems that illuminate as-needed and switch off automatically after our associates move to other areas of the facility. This allows us to save more than 14 million kWh of electricity a year,

Forty-two sites have completed Cascade Energy system tune-ups to assess and fine-tune refrigeration system operations.

Americold’s Energy Awards Program

In 2011, Americold started an internal Energy Awards Program that incentivizes local teams to hold themselves accountable for their energy usage. Each team has identified an Energy Champion, an employee with direct knowledge of the organization’s major energy-using systems, and is also responsible for developing and maintaining the larger focus of Americold’s Corporate Energy Management Team. Energy Champions monitor local energy draw, identify energy reduction opportunities, conduct waste walks, and compete against KPIs for energy awards.

SmartWay Partnerships

We partner with transportation service providers who are SmartWay participants. SmartWay is a US Environmental Protection Agency program that aims to accelerate the availability, adoption and market penetration of advanced fuel efficient technologies and operational practices in the freight supply chain. This initiative helps companies save fuel, lower costs and reduce adverse environmental impacts.
